National Monument

East of Edinburgh’s New Town the National Monument is one of many important monuments and buildings Calton Hill has on offer.

Impressive views over the city can be enjoyed from this World Heritage Site, where in 1822 this monument was built to commemorate Scots who had died in the Napoleonic Wars.

The aim was to copy the ancient temple in Athens, it took 12 horses and 70 men to carry the largest pieces of stone every quarried in Scotland up the hill. Worked stopped in 1829 leaving it unfinished.

Take time out to enjoy this beautiful area, walking around and soaking up the history.
